It was an absolute honor to travel from New York State to participate as Veteran of the Day on June 25, 2026. Served in the 2/504 82nd Abn Div from 1982-1986. Had my son by my side and wore my maroon beret for the first time in 40 years. Surreal experience.
Last year my wife Linda and me including Col. Paul Elverding and SgtMaj Dennis Oranje had the experience and privilege of walking the “bridge”. My father was a decorated Dutch soldier and I served in the US Marines in 1966-72. It was moving to say the least. During the annual honors ceremony in the municipality of Overbetuwe, Mayor Patricia Hoytink-Roubos recognized ten residents of Elst. Among them was Henk Hanenburg, who was appointed Knight in the Order of Orange-Nassau. He received this distinction for his extensive and long-term dedication.
