NIJMEGEN The task to Capture Nijmegen (pronouned Ni-may-gun) Bridge across the Waal River was assigned to US 82 Airborne Division. Due to various operational constraints assault to capture the bridge was delayed. The first wave of assault troops had sappers who were required to render safe the Far Bank of mines and other obstacles. The Bridge was finally captured with the loss of 48 US Paratroopers. It was an absolute honor to travel from New York State to participate as Veteran of the Day on June 25, 2026. Served in the 2/504 82nd Abn Div from 1982-1986. Had my son by my side and wore my maroon beret for the first time in 40 years. Surreal experience.

Last year my wife Linda and me including Col. Paul Elverding and SgtMaj Dennis Oranje had the experience and privilege of walking the “bridge”. My father was a decorated Dutch soldier and I served in the US Marines in 1966-72. It was moving to say the least.
