Thank you for the Sunset March

Dear members and volunteers of the Stichting Sunset March,
I am writing from the United States simply to say thank you.
I recently learned about the Sunset March and the 48 pairs of lights on De Oversteek, and I was deeply moved. That the people of Nijmegen honor the men of the 82nd Airborne who died crossing the Waal on September 20, 1944, every single evening, in every kind of weather, more than eighty years later, is a remarkable act of remembrance. Knowing what your city itself suffered during the war makes that gratitude all the more humbling.
My father fought in the Second World War, and I served in the U.S. Navy in the submarine service. For veterans and their families, knowing that a community on the other side of the ocean still remembers means more than I can easily put into words.
Please pass along my thanks to the veterans who walk the bridge each night. I hope this tradition continues for many generations to come, and I would be glad to know if there is any way an American supporter can help sustain it.

With sincere gratitude,
Tomas Vickerman
