My two brothers and I joined the Sunset March on Thursday, September 24, 2026. We were on a tour of the places south of Nijmegen (Oploo, Sint Anthonis, Overloon) where our late father had served with the 92nd (Loyals) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment, Royal Artillery, during the Second World War, and we had read about this amazing tribute paid nightly to the heroes of the US 82nd Airborne in crossing the Waal. It was a beautiful evening after a warm day and we were lucky enough to meet a contingent of women soldiers from the Dutch Army who were taking part, and to be greeted by Kees Bleijerveld, one of the march organisers. We crossed the bridge (bringing up the rear – we’re not as fit as we used to be!) and in the gathering darkness congregated around the memorial plinth to lay flowers. It was a poignant and moving experience and it was heartening to see so many young people and families paying tribute there. We will forever be grateful for having taken part.
