On behalf of the Board of the Nagasaki Monument Foundation, I would like to sincerely thank your organization, the Sunset March, the board and Team 31, for organizing the Sunset March on Saturday, August 9th. A huge compliment for what you do every day and enormous appreciation for agreeing to join us in this impressive march on the special day that marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bomb being dropped on Nagasaki. There was an incredible amount of interest from relatives, members of the Japanese community, many veterans, representatives from the Japanese and Dutch embassies and the municipality of Druten. The media was also present in droves; there was an incredible amount of attention. Thank you again, Board of the Nagasaki Monument Foundation,Rob Schouten and Ruud van Kraaij

  • Generous gift for the Sunset March Foundation.

Mr. Evert van de Poll, owner of the Van Gelder Group, the infrastructure partner of the Netherlands, recently turned 80.For his birthday, he had set up a campaign in which his guests could make a donation to 2 charities. In the context of his 80th birthday and living in freedom for 80 years, one of these charities became our foundation. 80 years of freedom must be celebrated and everyone must be aware of this luxury. Our freedom has cost many sacrifices and still produces victims, which is why we must be grateful to veterans for ensuring this freedom. In the end, Mr. van de Poll supplemented the amount and presented a check for no less than €2,500 at his office. Mr. van de Poll: “With this contribution, I would like to express my appreciation for the impressive daily tribute that you pay to the allied soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom.”

Dear Sunset March Team Thank you so very much for the honour of allowing our group of sons, daughters, and other relatives of the Canadian liberators of the Netherlands to partake in the emotional and meaningful Sunset March on April 30th, 2025. Particularly for me as the daughter of a Canadian Veteran, and as a Canadian Veteran myself, it was a privilege to have been selected to lead the “In Our Fathers’ Footsteps” contingent in this poignant act of remembrance. We shall never forget. Patricia M. Patricia MurphyMajor (retired)Daughter of Brigadier William MurphyCommander, First Canadian Armoured Brigade 1944 – 1945
